How To Choose A Quicklink
Overview
Quick links, also known as connecting pins, missing links, master links, power links, or spare links, are an efficient way to join a bike chain. They're essential for easy maintenance, cleaning, and emergency repairs during rides. Typically, they replace a chain link with interlocking plates and pins, eliminating the need for a chain breaker.
Usage and Reusability
Most quick links are designed for single use due to potential weakening and risk of snapping upon reuse. However, certain brands like KMC offer reusable options.
Shimano and Campagnolo do not produce reusable quick links.
SRAM's 8- and 9-speed PowerLinks can be reused, but its 10-, 11-, and 12-speed PowerLocks cannot.
YBN quick links are touted to be reusable up to five times.
Unique Designs
Wippermann Connex quick links feature a distinctive hooked design, allowing multiple reuses and tool-free installation/removal.
Many quick links from KMC, YBN, and Wippermann are compatible with groupsets from major brands.
Brand-Specific Quick Links
SRAM was a pioneer in releasing quick links with its PowerLink and PowerLock systems.
Campagnolo introduced the C-Link for its 13-speed Ekar groupset, currently its sole quick link offering.
Compatibility
Quick links are typically specific to the manufacturer and the speed of the drivetrain. Ensure compatibility before purchase.
Carrying Tips
It's advisable to carry a spare quick link during rides for emergency chain repairs.
